VINTAGE GERMAN R.G.U. RESTORATION
Our good friend in the Netherlands Peter Valicek sent us in this very sad looking R.G.U. diesel engine from Germany along with some spare parts with the friendly challenge to "see what you can do with this engine to improve the performance and whatever else you can do with the parts". Okay then, well lets see what we can come up with in response to this taunt, the gauntlet has well and truly been thrown down it would seem.

OK so let's pull it down and see what's what. The spare parts will be used to build a custom built multi cylinder engine which can be seen on the "CUSTOM BUILT" engines page here https://cre8tionworx.co.nz/pages/custom-built-engines
So here's all the bits dismantled and ready for cleaning.........

High performance was obviously not on the list of design parameters when this poor old boy was conceived judging by these somewhat undersized transfer ports........

Well, we'll need to see what we can do to rectify that massive oversight by the original designer.
Here we have the original parts all cleaned up and ready for some rectification work to be done.

First step is to remachine some transfer ports into the liner that don't require a magnifying glass to see, lol.
Here we have the first step in this engines rebuild with the modification of the transfer ports to something that can at least be seen with the naked eye.
We also took the liberty of adding a transfer boost port.
The exhaust port has also been modified with the addition of a 60 degree upward slope to the top edge to allow for better gasflow exit and to slightly advance the exhaust opening time and duration.

Next step will be to remachine the crankshaft main journal and manufacture a new crank with proper balancing and lube feed into the main journal.
Here's the crankcase all finished and ready for the new crankshaft.

Cylinder casting and spacer gasket all cleaned and modified and ready to go back together.

Now we need to tooling for relapping the cylinder liner and fitting the new piston and contra.
