BMP 3.5 RESTORATION

Well here we have another engine sent in from Adrian to recieve the full rebuild to better than new life.

Lets get on with the dissassembly of this engine and see what's what.

Well apart from the general all round shoddiness of it, it's going to need a new rod, piston and contra, gudgeon and a jolly good bath to start with.

Well here we have the crankcase assembly all cleaned and the crankshaft refitted along with new bearing as the old ones were somewhat notchy.

Prop driver and spinner cleaned up and refitted.

Next up is to make the replacement con rod and then carry on with reasembling the back plate and tank assembly.

Now it's onto reassembling the back plate and tank assembly.

Now that the bottom end is completed and reassembled we will move onto breathing new life into the cylinder assembly which is in a very sad state of not roundness and a serious groove carved up the side of the bore from a very poor fitting gudgeon pin. After some very labourious and trying lapping we now have a cylinder that is nice and round, true and clean, with the correct liner geometry also applied.

Now its time to final machine the new piston and contra.

We replaced the original alluminium contra piston with a proper cast iron one that was made to the more modern design of a flat combustion side with the addition of a hemi style combustion center to give a much better fuel burn. We also made the compression screw side the raised point style to give the compression (vernier) screw something to seat on. This helps reduce the tendincy to unwind the compression when running and also allows the comp screw to seat in a centered point to avoid wondering off center whilst the compression is being adjusted.

All reassembled and starting to look far more like an engine.

Next up is to clean and refit the venturi assembly, then we'll be looking for the fuel tin again...............

And here is the distinguished old English gentleman all ready to live again.

First pop test run....

And the hot restart............

Another fine old diesel saved from the rubbish bin.
